ISRAELI OCCUPIED GAZA - Israel gave “no reason” for a change in route for a convoy of 109 aid lorries carrying food into Gaza through the Karam Abu Salem border crossing before they were looted, UNRWA’s Louise Wateridge told The National from Nuseirat in central Gaza.
“This is an area where we’ve seen an increase in looting over the last few months – and it all comes down to when the Rafah border was closed coinciding with a huge drop in aid and increase in criminal activity and looting, because of an environment that’s been created where society has collapsed and there’s very little in terms of law and order,” she said.
Ms Wateridge said the agency does not know what has happened to the looted aid but assumes it has been repurposed.
Ms Wateridge accused Israel of “disregarding their legal obligations” for creating a safe environment through which to distribute aid.
